Bhimbetka, located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most fascinating prehistoric sites in the world, famous for its ancient rock shelters and cave paintings. Bhimbetka is named after “Bhima,” a character from the Mahabharata, and is believed to have been his resting place. The site consists of over 700 rock shelters, out of which more than 400 contain prehistoric paintings. These paintings depict scenes of daily life such as hunting, dancing, animals, and rituals, giving insight into early human civilization. The rock art spans multiple periods, from the Paleolithic to medieval times, making Bhimbetka an important center for archaeological study.
